Film & TV

Lights, Camera, Action!

My first exposure to the entertainment industry was when parts of my novella, That Year in China, were adapted into a limited TV series nominated for China’s Golden Eagle Awards.

Since then, I taught myself how to write screenplays and have been working as a screenwriter and script consultant for directors, producers and major studios in China. My language skills (Mandarin and English) and bicultural background (Chinese and American) gave me a unique edge to create content with global appeal.

Sophie’s RevengeWhat Women Want, and Guns anRoses are just some of my more notable projects produced by leading studios in Asia. Working for media powerhouses like Warner Bros. China, Bona Film Group, Perfect World Entertainment, Wanda Entertainment, CJ Entertainment, etc. afforded me invaluable on set and writers’ room experiences.

I have also collaborated with acting talents like Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, and Andy Lau, and writer-directors such as Eva Jing (China’s queen of rom-com), Ning Hao (China’s Tarantino) and Frant Gwo who later directed The Wandering Earth, a sci-fi that became one of China’s highest grossing films of all times.

When it comes to storytelling, I specialize in commercial premises, lush world-building, strong plot, and swift pacing. Often, production companies hire me to finetune scripts with a focus on structure, plot and pacing.

Interestingly, I broke into the entertainment industry consulting on China’s first genre film, a rom-com, which was a category I swore I would never touch. After that, I became known as a rom-com script expert. But my personal favorite genres are mystery, thriller and sci-fi.

My screenwriting skills influence my writing styles in other mediums which are always described as cinematic. This line of work has shown me the power and the universality of storytelling and its ability to connect us all.
